How to Get Extra iCloud Storage When Upgrading to a New iPhone or iPad

Upgrading your device should be an exciting moment, not a stressful one. If you’re moving to a new iPhone or iPad, the last thing you want is to run out of storage while transferring your data. Luckily, with extra temporary iCloud storage, you can easily back up your current device and bring all your important information along with you to your shiny new one. Let’s walk you through how to take advantage of this feature, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free transition.

Who Can Get Temporary iCloud Storage?

Good news: if you’re upgrading to a new iPhone or iPad but don’t have enough iCloud space to create a backup, you’re eligible for extra temporary iCloud storage! This free storage will give you all the space you need to securely back up your data and seamlessly transfer it to your new device.

Before you start, make sure your device is up to date and that you have your Apple ID credentials ready. Once you’ve got that, you’re good to go!

How to Back Up Your Current Device

Ready to back up your current iPhone or iPad? Follow these simple steps to create a temporary backup:

  1. Open Settings on your device.
  2. Navigate to General > Transfer or Reset [Device].
  3. Under the Prepare for New [Device] section, tap Get Started.
  4. If iCloud Backup is turned off, you’ll see a prompt. Tap Turn On Backup to Transfer.
  5. If you don’t have enough iCloud storage, a message will pop up letting you know that you’re eligible for free extra iCloud storage. Tap Continue to start the backup process.
  6. Wait for the backup to complete. Once it’s done, you’re all set!

If you don’t get a notification about extra storage, it means you already have enough space in iCloud to back up your device.

Transferring Your Backup to Your New Device

Once you’ve got your new iPhone or iPad, it’s time to restore that backup. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Power on your new device and follow the on-screen setup steps.
  2. When you reach the Apps & Data screen, select Restore from iCloud Backup.
  3. Sign in using your Apple ID and password.
  4. Pick the most recent backup you created from the list of available backups.
  5. Wait for the restore process to complete. Depending on how much data you have, this may take a few minutes.

How Long Do You Have to Use Your Temporary iCloud Backup?

Your temporary iCloud backup is available for 21 days from the time it's created. Make sure to restore it to your new device within that period. If your new iPhone or iPad doesn’t arrive in time, don’t worry! You can extend the storage for an additional 21 days.

To keep your backup longer, open Settings on your current device and tap Keep My Backup Longer. This will buy you extra time to complete the transfer before the backup is automatically deleted.

What Happens After You Restore Your Backup?

Once your temporary backup has been restored to your new device, it will stay available for 7 more days before being permanently deleted. At this point, you can choose to upgrade to iCloud+ if you want to keep your device backed up continuously with more storage space.
